Writing Playlist: June 2016

I don’t know about you but I’m fascinated by looking at writing playlists and finding out what other writers are inspired by. Like everyone, I spend way too long crafting the perfect writing playlist so today I thought I’d share five of the songs that are on my current playlist. I’ve embedded the YouTube videos so you can have a listen while you read.

Let me know which is your favourite!

1. Shadow Fury – Gunship

Fave lyrics: ‘No one said it’d feel this good, with the warmth of smoke in your lungs and the taste of blood on your tongue.’

To be honest, every track on Gunship’s album could have made it onto this list (if you like retrosynth or anything remotely 80s related, you need this album in your life).

2. Hands Down – Dashboard Confessional

Fave lyrics: ‘My hopes are so high that your kiss might kill me.’

Oh hi, angsty teenage Carly. Who *didn’t* have this song on every writing playlist in the early 00s?

3. Wonder Sleeps Here – Twin Atlantic

Fave lyrics: ‘Like water on glass, you distort my view.’

Nailing yearning and lust in a single song is Twin Atlantic’s speciality but this is the track I find the most inspiring when I’m writing.

4. A Change of Heart – The 1975

Fave lyrics (I mean, narrowing down a single line in this song is almost impossible but fine): ‘You used to have a face straight out of a magazine, now you just look like anyone.’

I have a whole novel idea bubbling away in the back of my mind purely inspired by this song. One listen and I bet you’ll have one too.

5. Into You – Ariana Grande

Fave lyric: ‘A little less conversation and a little more touch my body.’

Is there a sexier song out at the moment? No, there is not. You want to write a scene loaded with tension? Listen to this.
