What’s the story?
Mara has learned to punish the wicked as the Messenger’s apprentice. Those who act out of selfishness and greed, and others who become violent because of prejudice and hate, pay the ultimate price. But Mara is constantly reminded that Messengers are serving their own kind of punishment—for every person who is offered justice, they wear a tattoo that symbolises the heart of the crime. As Mara delves deeper into her harsh reality, she will discover that in spite of all the terror she and Messenger inflict, caring in this world is the hardest part of all.
What did I think?
Boy, do I love me some Messenger of Fear! I loved book one in the series so I was excited to see if The Tattooed Heart stood up against its predecessor…and it definitely does, hooray! Of course, there are plenty of ‘Pay or Play’ spine-tingling moments but there’s also a lot of emotion in this instalment, which I really enjoyed. It was great to get to know more about the Messenger’s history and his lost love, Ariadne, and our heroine, Mara, stands out as one of my favourites of the year.
Who would I recommend it to?
Anyone who fancies a good scare, with a surprising romantic subplot.
