Summary (from Goodreads): Models, spies and lipstick gadgets… When Jessica’s father, a former spy, vanishes mysteriously, Jessica takes matters into her own hands. She’s not just a daddy’s girl who’s good at striking a pose; she’s a trained spook who knows how to take on MI6 and beat them at their own game.
My Review: Jessica Cole isn’t quite your average teenager – she’s the daughter of an ex-spy who’s on a mission to find her father after his disappears without trace. When it becomes clear that MI6 have no intention of looking for him, Jessica takes control and uses her up and coming modelling career as a cover for some spying and sleuthing of her own.
As you’d expect from the summary, Code Red Lipstick is so much fun. Jessica is a funny character who you can’t help but warm to and the story in Code Red Lipstick is compelling and entertaining. Jessica’s Bond-worthy gadgets and the rip-roaring pace make this one feel like a classic spy page turner and I loved the way we were drip fed information about Jessica’s backstory and her mother. It kept things interesting from beginning to end and from a couple of chapters in I knew why this series is so popular with readers.
It was great to see some of the book set in Paris and Sky did a fantastic job of bringing the city to life on the page. Throw in Nathan and Margaret, the MI6 agents, as well as Jessica’s supportive best friend, Becky, and you have quite the cast of characters! Another thing I really appreciated is that the love story doesn’t take centre stage – this is the story of Jessica coming into her own and searching for her father, not falling in love, so I’m glad the romantic side of things didn’t take over.
Code Red Lipstick is a fast-paced, fun read that’s big on escapism and is the perfect book to curl up and read on a dreary day like we’re having today. It’s guaranteed to put a smile on your face…not to mention give you major dress envy!
